The first year things were setup different. A 10x10' chain links dog kennels & a home-made lid (2x6" board frame with farm wire across it) on top sheltered the pond from predators. Next year a back yard fence was put up, and 2 house dogs go out intermittently, discouraging predators. Without the lid the pond is vulnerable to predatory birds, but we've yet to have issues with that. The chain link fence is handy for hanging nets.
